The other day when I grabbed the old baby bag with butterfly applique to take papers to a meeting it occurred to me that I might need to make a new tote bag soon. We don’t have a baby anymore and it’s probably best if I don’t carry a baby bag to a meeting with a group of adults that know I don’t have a baby.
So this weekend I holed up in the sewing room and made this scrappy tote bag.
I didn’t use a pattern because clumsy crafters can only live out their legacy if they start projects unprepared. I wanted a more modern looking bag but in the end it turned out more traditional.
At the bottom I put some pretty details to make it sit flat without being overly bulky. I like unexpected details, it fits who I am.
Such as the light purple band at the top of the lining. It’s unexpected and I love it. Plus when I made the lining about 1/4th of an inch too short, it was the perfect (unplanned) solution. I am a craft supplies hoarder so I had it on hand already.
And then there’s the handles which are a little bit different and add great texture.
It’s not modern (at all) but I’m glad I took the time to be a maker instead of a constant consumer. And of course, I always learn something new such as how not to sew the tote bag side to the corner on accident.
What do you think? Too traditional for you?
